The Bank needed to understand  the financial and operational risks associated with a $9 Billion corporate agency division prior to offering it for sale.

Project Manager of operational and financial audit of this troubled portfolio.  Interfaced daily with external and internal auditors and legal counsel, as well as with senior management.  Managed 100 people in three locations in the successful accomplishment of the audit which came in under its $8 million budget and before the due date.  Division successfully sold.

 

Hewlett Packard

High Tech Company

Brought in to take over project management of a major $100+ million dollar environmental litigation case from outside counsel.

Project Manager managing legal, financial, risk management, and environmental experts in achievement of project goals. Completed project before due date, using only 60% of a $6 million budget, and recovering over 3 times the stated goal.

 

Wells Fargo Bank

Financial Services Company

Bank had a Business Continuity concern due to a critical system having poor documentation and only being understood and operated by an outside vendor.

Managed the project and personally documented the data input and data output of the system.  The project was successful in documenting and independently operating the system, as well as training the employees, all in half the time assigned by the Bank.

 

Hewlett Packard

High Tech Company

Hired to replicate HP Risk Management for the $7 Billion creation of Agilent Technologies, at that time the largest IPO in history.

As Project Manager, developed and tracked 40 project plans replicating HP’s insurance programs and processes.  HP Risk Management was the only unit not under Ernst & Young’s project management; it was the first unit finished.

 

California State Automobile Association (CSAA)

For Profit Association

Hired to research and document vendor compliance in CSAA’s Y2K efforts.

Successfully developed compliance database to track, monitor and report on vendor Y2K compliance before due date.  Given Project Management responsibility over all Y2K project managers due to this achievement.

 

New Product/Service Development

Visa International

Financial Services Company

Ground floor involvement in the development of VISA Cash, the revolutionary chip-based stored value card.

Developed the conceptual, feasibility, and business requirements documents.  Also developed the proof-of-concept financial modeling and the planning implementation guide when product was made available to Member banks.

 

Wells Fargo Bank

Financial Services Company

Some two months before the pilot launch of a new Merchant ATM Depository service it was noted that no work had been done to integrate the critical Items Processing systems.

Analyzed the five systems of the Items Processing unit, successfully managed the system design changes, documented the work effort and developed the testing environments for the five systems.  Completed project one week ahead of schedule.

Retained by President to assist in planning and development of two new services, and in their annual strategic planning efforts. Completed the project planning documents and Business Cases for the new services on time, as well as the internal processes and systems requirements for a successful launch.  One service launched successfully, the other delayed for strategic reasons.  Also assisted in the development of 2007 Strategic Plan with strategic initiatives and timeframes.

Bank was seeking to develop a long-term strategy for its online banking service.

Developed plans to change the organization from paper intensive to computer-based with customer friendly interfaces for enrollment, reporting, customer servicing and transactions.

Company was seeking to expand within its current market niche and into other Public Health sectors.

Developed company’s first Business Plan with Corporate Vision, Mission Statement, Tactical and Strategic Initiatives, and Financials.

 

Haight Ashbury Free Clinics

Non-Profit Organization

Organization had undergone strategic efforts by another consulting firm two years earlier and needed to develop a Strategic Plan.

First Strategic Plan in the 35-year history of this internationally known organization.  Plan contained current and future synopsis of each of the Clinics five Programs, four major strategic initiatives and associated financial projections.

Internet Start-up Company

Startup required a Business Plan and Financials.

Developed Business Plan with five year financials; changed company organization; put CEO in contact with Venture Capitalists and Angels to pursue funding.

Business Reengineering and Workflow Analysis

eBay

Online Auction Company

Company was encountering quality of service issues with a major insurance vendor. Brought in by Risk Management two months prior to impending Client Service Agreement to evaluate current business relationship and to produce recommendations for improvement.

Interviewed both client and vendor management and produced Gap Analysis Document indicating client/vendor disconnects with recommendations for relationship improvements.  Created 6 new processes, SLAs and flow diagrams for implementation. Developed metrics for objective evaluation of service quality and incorporated them in an agreed-to "scorecard."  Produced Guidelines to improve oral and written interactions. New Client Service Agreement completed on time.

 

Visa International

Financial Services Company

Large Member banks were unhappy with having two operations for credit card transactions – one, paper driven for dealing with small banks, and the second, an electronic one, for dealing with larger banks. Visa was requested to solve the problem.

Contracted to put together the business requirements for a proposed solution.  Quickly determined that proposed solution was inadequate for Members and Visa.  Performed business requirements as requested, with financial modeling; presented alternative solution backed with modeling.  Dissuaded management from pursing initial proposal saving Visa millions of dollars annually.

Bank was interested in re-engineering the back-office of its online banking unit to improve service.

Conducted workflow analysis with recommendations that streamlined the organization and improved productivity.  Also produced business and technical requirements for a new system application, including a contingency plan for risk reduction, that was triggered when a major vendor failed in the new system implementation.

Rapidly expanding company required analyses and documentation of its financial management functions to prepare for the hiring of a Chief Financial Officer.

Documented all financial functions, both for the 10 shops and for corporate headquarters.  Develop job description for a new CFO position, posted opportunity on the Internet, reviewed 250 resumes, interviewed 7 candidates and hired company’s first CFO.

Mainframe organization was instituting a client/server environment and needed an application development process that could later be automated.

Defined and documented an application development process. Worked with six systems departments in developing a manual process. Made recommendation that automation of process be directed from CIO level.

Company required analyses of its business organization, workflows and functions.

Conducted analyses, interviews and working sessions to establish basis for setting strategic direction. Two documents -- Workflow and Functional Analyses, Organizational Analysis – were produced with recommendations on improving workflows, business functions, and the organizational reporting lines.

Risk Management unit was concerned with the success rate of its projects and requested a methodology to improve its success rate.

Developed a business case methodology, documented the work effort and presented it to management for implementation before contract deliverable date.

 

Inovant

Financial Service Company

Inovant (Visa’s recently spun-off back office operations) needed performance metrics to help management evaluate its new processing system.

Worked with KPMG to design management metrics for Inovant.  Developed the requirements and specifications, implemented financial reporting improvements, secured software, and managed the development efforts.  Metrics completed and were to be implemented company-wide.

Retained to assist Risk Management in the development of security compliance reporting for software, hardware and accountholder information. Developed compliance reports to track and report on the security attestation of accountholder information for 23 Business Units. Project completed in 2/3 of original contracted time.  Given follow-up projects.  One relating to software and hardware security measures, the other project related to training of all non-employee personnel on security measures. Both of these projects were also completed successfully.

Retained to gather evidentiary documentation and validate the adherence of  Visa's global systems to Business Continuity policies.  Met with management to determine systems and documents required. Produced hardcopy evidentiary compliance documentation for each of the global systems.  Information put into a new automated repository system for easy management tracking and reporting. Tested the new system in the transition from Test to Production Environment. Performed Gap Analysis and provided process and reporting  recommendations for business continuity improvements as Visa now becomes a corporation.  Projects successfully completed before due dates.

 

Financial Turnaround

Bankers Financial Group

Consulting Firm

Brought in by President of this management consulting firm to help with the financial turnaround of one of its clients on the verge of bankruptcy.

Renegotiated credit line which was being pulled by the bank; negotiated tax plan for IRS employer taxes three quarters in arrears; renegotiated Account Payable from $1.1 million to $700K with a 24 month payout; renegotiated a six month forgiveness of lease payments.

 

Haight Ashbury Free Clinics

Non-Profit Organization

Retained to assist in financial management and turnaround of $15 million non-profit suffering from $1 million embezzlement by CFO. Developed resolutions to delinquent 2003-2004 Audit Findings with City and Federal government funding sources.  Negotiated payment programs with vendors and government agencies.
